Dave Surveys is a feature for members to take surveys and immediately receive earnings in their Dave checking account. Members have earned $3.5 million 2 years after its release. I led the design and worked with product and engineering so it could be quickly released on a 2 month timeline for the holidays.

Background

waiting for money is a pain

Dave initially released a job search feature called Side Hustle, which specializes in gigs and part-time work. The surveys listed there were popular amongst Dave members because they were a quick and easy way for them to earn money. However, they didn't pay out instantly and redirected members out of the Dave app.

A PM from another team approached my team to launch a new surveys feature to solve for these pain points. We jumped on the opportunity because it sounded like a win to us.

How might we improve the surveys experience and keep a member's money in the Dave ecosystem?

Release Dave Surveys so members can get earnings instantly for taking surveys in their Dave checking account.

Design

How it works

First, members take an intro survey which gathers basic information about them. Dave Surveys then populates with curated surveys. Surveys refresh every time the app is opened, giving members an incentive to revisit the feature. The more surveys a member takes, the more higher paying ones show up (up to $10). Earnings are immediately deposited into their Dave Checking account.

Nothing’s perfect

Dave partnered with a 3rd party vendor which brought about some constraints. I led discussions with product and engineering to find solutions. To help members find surveys that are a good fit, I wanted to categorize them by industry and add filtering but was unable to because of API constraints. I categorized surveys by recommended, pay out, and time instead.

Although the surveys are embedded in the Dave app, I could only control the design of the Intro Survey. The actual surveys often had poor UX (misplaced buttons, strange layouts) which affected the overall experience.

Surpassing 1 million

With $1M member earnings within the first 6 months, we were able to increase the number of active Dave Spend accounts and money in those accounts. 2 years after release, Dave members earned $3.5M from surveys. Additionally, we found that 40% of our survey users are inactive members and we can use Surveys promotions to reengage them.
