get paid to play

Dave Surveys is a feature that lets members get paid for taking third-party surveys. Earnings are deposited into their Dave Checking accounts, with the goal that they'd use their accounts more. I led the design and partnered with product and engineering to launch this within 2 months, just in time for the holidays.

Background

the starting point

Before Dave Surveys, members liked taking surveys on Dave's Side Hustle job feature, but they had to leave the app and wait for their earnings. The team saw an opportunity to launch a dedicated Surveys experience that paid members instantly in their Dave Checking accounts.

Since the surveys themselves were controlled by a 3rd party provider, I needed to figure out where design would have the biggest impact. I focused on making it easier to discover the feature and find surveys worth taking.

user goal

Help members earn extra money quickly through surveys.

business goal

Deposit survey earnings into Dave Checking accounts so they'd use them more.

Design

How it works

First, members take an intro survey that gathers basic information about them. Dave Surveys then populates with curated surveys. Earnings are immediately deposited into their Dave Checking account. New surveys appear every time the app is opened, giving them a reason to come back.

USER FLOW
challenges

navigating constraints

I originally categorized surveys by industry. However, I learned that the API didn't provide industry information. Next, I explored organizing them by popularity using a star rating. This doesn't tell them if a survey is worth taking and the rating system was too complicated to build. Finally, I categorized the surveys by recommended, payout, and time. This helps members find relevant surveys and quickly decide if the payout was worth their time.

Surpassing 1 million

Within the first six months, Dave members earned $1M through Surveys. The feature helped people use their checking accounts more and deposit money into them. Members continued taking surveys, earning $3.5M over the next 2 years.
